Bogs

Restoring and replenishing peat bogs will foster positive changes in water quality flowing from these once abundant wetlands. Thebog's functioning as an activated charcoal filter captures mercury and other pollutants before they enter tidal waters. The peat captures and permanently holds nitrogen and carbon from the atmosphere it is forming. Peat bogs also provide the necessary growing conditions for the Atlantic White Cedar; an irreplaceable component of the bog ecosystem because of the Cedar's legendary ability to keep water fresh. Water remains stored in the bogs and is slowly discharged into the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Two man-made wetland bogs have been created to provide habitat for numerous rare plant species, like the pitcher plant and Atlantic White Cedar, threatened with local extinction and to demonstrate how storm water and building runoff can be used as the water source for these unique "water gardens".

The most beneficial product of this restoration project is the impact it will have on raising students' awareness of the significant ecological role wetlands play in the health of the Bay. Students will be able to experience first hand connections between the Bay and its watershed and, most important, students and adults will be empowered with knowledge to create andpreserve wetlands.
